Join the work to support the Midterm Election

The midterm election is Tuesday, November 3. In Minnesota there is an important primary election on Tuesday, August 11.

There is much work we can do locally to safeguard our elections and defend democracy. St. Croix Valley Indivisible (SCVI) is committed to supporting candidates who align with our values.

The election-related efforts of SCVI advocates can make a difference. Our past actions had an impact. This election work will too.

Recall that for No Kings 3 SCVI was part of turning out 200,000 in St. Paul and 8 million across the country. Recall that we participated in May Day Strong, interrupting our usual routines and giving back to the community by picking up trash in Oak Park Heights. When the Department of Homeland Security showed interest in opening an ICE detention center in Woodbury, we led the successful effort to say, “No, not here!”  SCVI has regular protests every Tuesday in downtown Stillwater and biweekly on Saturdays on the Oak Park Heights easternmost overpass. Our resistance message is being heard. Our issue teams carry the message on immigrant rights, climate justice, and health justice.

Up next is our election work.  Here is how we will have a positive impact.

Protecting Elections

The infrastructure that supports free and fair elections is strong in Minnesota and, notably, in Washington County. Minnesota’s Secretary of State, Steve Simon, is smart and experienced. Each election Minnesota ranks at or near the top of all states in terms of voter participation. Still, we are aware of threats to the election process and certification at the federal level.

SCVI will collaborate with local and national partners to protect our elections and our democracy. The organization called the Minnesota Democracy Defense Table is a statewide coalition of over a 100 organizations. Their work is non-partisan and pro-democracy. Monarca/Unidos MN and the Minnesota Indivisible Alliance are also part of this effort. As potential risk scenarios are developed, SCVI will communicate about how we can best defend our elections.

One way to support and protect our local elections is to be an election judge. Let us know you’re interested and we will provide the information you need to apply.

Getting the Right People Elected

Getting the right people elected will focus on both local legislative candidates as well as other races where our contribution could help unseat an incumbent we do not support, e.g., Representative Pete Stauber (MN District 8). We will concentrate on:

  • Making and waving banners for candidates

  • Door knocking for candidates

  • Promoting house parties and fundraisers sponsored by our advocates
