A big thanks to all who participated!
May Day has a long and storied history from ancient celebrations of spring to a day of labor rights. It is perhaps most famous for an 1886 strike for reduced working hours by nearly 500,000 people across the country. The strike turned deadly within days after conflicts with police. Internationally, May 1 is a global day for labor to commemorate those deaths.
Recently, May Day has reemerged as a day to fight for worker's rights and immigrant rights.

SCVI used the day of No Work, No School, No Shopping to give back to the community. We had a great turnout with 48 participants who worked hard to clean up the grassy areas between Highway 36 and the service roads on either side of the highway. They ended up with many large bags of trash that were dumped, with permission, in nearby park dumpsters. About half the group stayed for lunch, drinks, and community at a local immigrant owned restaurant hurt by ICE. At lunch, there was sense of accomplishing something good for the community and pride and joy for doing it.
